A lens that shatters into the eye is a serious injury risk. The FDA’s 21 CFR 801.410 requires all sunglasses and eyeglass lenses sold in the US to be impact-resistant, verified by the drop-ball test. It is one of the oldest and most enforced eyewear rules.
