Sunglasses UV Testing Explained: UV400, Spectrophotometers & Reports

“UV400” is printed on millions of sunglasses, but the claim is only as good as the testing behind it. As a manufacturer that UV-tests every lens batch, we explain how UV protection is actually measured and how buyers can verify it instead of trusting a sticker.
What UV400 actually means
UV400 means a lens blocks 100% of ultraviolet radiation up to 400 nanometres — covering both UVA (315–400 nm) and UVB (280–315 nm). It is the gold standard, exceeding the looser “99% UV” claims. The number is about wavelength, not percentage, which trips up many buyers.
How UV protection is measured
UV transmittance is measured on a UV-Vis spectrophotometer that shines light from ~280 nm to 780 nm through the lens and records transmittance at each wavelength. The instrument outputs a curve; a UV400 lens should read effectively 0% transmittance below 400 nm.
| Band | Wavelength | Risk | UV400 result |
|---|---|---|---|
| UVB | 280–315 nm | Sunburn, corneal damage | Blocked |
| UVA | 315–400 nm | Cataract, retinal aging | Blocked |
| Visible | 400–780 nm | Glare (managed by tint) | Controlled by category |
Tint darkness is not UV protection
A common dangerous myth: a dark lens means more UV protection. Without a UV-absorbing additive, a dark lens dilates the pupil and lets more UV in. UV protection comes from the lens chemistry, not the visible tint, which is why testing matters.
Dark lenses without UV protection are worse than no sunglasses — the pupil opens wider and absorbs more UV. The additive, not the tint, does the protecting.
Reading a UV test report
- Check the standard tested against (EN ISO 12312-1, ANSI Z80.3, AS/NZS 1067)
- Confirm UVA and UVB transmittance values, not just a pass/fail
- Verify the lens material and build match your order
- Check the lab is accredited (SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas)
How LumiShades tests UV
We spectrophotometer-test incoming lens material and finished pairs, keeping curves on file per batch. Our quality control process documents UV results in the final inspection report, and we supply third-party reports for compliance. See lens choices in our sunglasses range.

Why source this from Wenzhou with LumiShades
Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province is widely regarded as China’s eyewear manufacturing capital, producing a large share of the world’s sunglasses. That concentration matters to buyers: a deep local supply chain for acetate sheet, hinges, lens blanks, plating and packaging means shorter component lead times, easier color and material matching, and a workforce with decades of eyewear-specific skill. LumiShades has manufactured in this ecosystem since 2009, and our vertical integration — in-house injection molding, acetate cutting, CNC milling, lens tinting, decoration and quality control — means no part of verified UV400 sunglasses is quietly subcontracted to a workshop you cannot audit.
For international buyers, that vertical control translates into accountability. When a single factory owns every step, defects are traced and fixed at source rather than bounced between vendors, and your specifications survive intact from first sample to bulk. We back this with 15+ years of experience, shipments to 60+ countries, more than 5 million pairs produced per year and a 98.5% on-time delivery rate. Our certifications — CE EN ISO 12312-1, FDA registration, ANSI Z80.3, AS/NZS 1067, REACH, ISO 9001 and BSCI audit — mean the compliance documentation your market requires already exists. Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order quantity? Our MOQ is 50 pairs per design, which lets new brands and buyers validate verified UV400 sunglasses before committing to volume. Pricing improves at 300, 1,000 and 5,000+ pairs, dropping as low as $2.10 per pair on volume programs.
How long does it take? Samples are ready in 7–10 days and bulk production runs 25–35 days, plus QC, packing and shipping. Using an existing frame shape avoids new tooling and is the fastest route; fully custom moulds and acetate builds add time.
Can you handle custom branding and compliance documentation? Yes. We decorate in-house (laser engraving, pad printing, metal logo plates, custom temple colors and packaging) and provide the UV, impact and standard-specific test reports your destination markets require. Tell us your target countries up front and we build the right documentation into the order.
