How to Vet an Eyewear Factory Before You Place an Order

A sample can look perfect and still come from a factory that can't deliver bulk on spec or on time. Vetting the manufacturer — not just the product — is what protects a serious order. Here is the audit framework LumiShades recommends buyers apply to any eyewear factory, including us.

Documents first, conversation second

Before discussing price, collect and verify the paperwork. A real factory produces these quickly because it has them on file.

Assess real production capacity

Capacity tells you whether your order will be a priority or an afterthought. Ask for monthly output, number of assembly lines, peak-season lead time and current utilization. A factory shipping 5M+ pairs a year, like LumiShades, can absorb a 50-pair launch and a 50,000-pair program without one cannibalizing the other.

Audit the quality system

Lens testing matters most for sunglasses — UV400 and impact resistance are safety claims. A factory that can hand you a UV transmission report per batch is operating at the right level. Learn what's tested in UV400 explained.

On-site or remote: the signals that matter

If you can visit, watch the floor: are workstations organized, is WIP labeled, are rejected parts quarantined, do operators use jigs? If you audit remotely, ask for an unedited line walk-through video and a live video call to the production area, not a brochure. Third-party audit firms can also inspect for you.

The cleanest brochure and the messiest factory floor often belong to the same company. Insist on seeing the floor, not the folder.

Test communication under pressure

Send a detailed technical question and a deliberate spec ambiguity. A capable manufacturer flags the ambiguity and asks a clarifying question; a re-seller glosses over it. Response quality on technical points is the single best predictor of how bulk production will go.

Check references and track record

Ask which export markets the factory serves and for how long. A 15+ year exporter to 60+ countries has survived returns, claims and audits that weed out weak operators. Cross-check with your freight forwarder, who knows who actually ships volume.

Make the decision

Score each candidate across documents, capacity, QC, communication and references. The factory that scores well on all five — not just the cheapest — is the one to trust with bulk. Then de-risk further with a pre-production sample, as covered in our sampling guide.
