A Private-Label Rimless Line and Reorder Program for an Optical Chain
How a multi-store optical chain replaced an unreliable supplier with a LumiShades private-label rimless line — engineered for repeatable quality and a frictionless quarterly reorder cycle that keeps shelves stocked.
A regional optical chain with its own house brand
The client was a regional optical retail chain operating around 30 stores, with a house-brand eyewear line that sat alongside the designer frames in their cabinets. Rimless sunglasses — minimalist, lightweight, premium-feeling — were a strong seller in their house range, especially with older and professional customers who value discretion and comfort.
The problem was their existing rimless supplier. Lens-to-bridge mounting quality drifted from batch to batch, leading to stress cracks around the drill holes, loose lenses and a stream of in-store warranty swaps. Worse, reorder lead times were unpredictable, so popular SKUs went out of stock for weeks. The chain wanted a partner who could deliver consistent rimless quality and, just as importantly, a dependable reorder rhythm they could plan their cabinets around.
Rimless is unforgiving — and reorders must be boring
Rimless eyewear is the hardest mainstream construction to get right. With no frame surrounding the lens, every load is carried by drill-mounts and the bridge, so lens material, drilling precision, bushing fit and assembly torque all have to be controlled tightly or the product cracks in the customer's hands. The previous supplier's inconsistency had created a warranty headache and was eroding trust in the chain's house brand.
The second challenge was operational rather than technical: the chain needed reorders to be boring — predictable lead times, identical product batch after batch, and stable pricing they could build a margin model on. An optical buyer planning cabinet space across 30 stores cannot work with a supplier whose quality and timing vary. They needed a documented spec locked once and reproduced faithfully every quarter.
The LumiShades approach
We approached this as a long-term program, not a one-off order, and engineered out the failure modes that had plagued the previous supplier.
Frame & materials. We built the rimless range on beta-titanium temples and bridge — flexible, corrosion-resistant and light — with adjustable titanium nose arms. The structural choice that mattered most was the lens: we specified polycarbonate lens blanks rather than brittle stock, which tolerate drill-mounting far better, then used CNC-controlled drilling with nylon bushings and a calibrated assembly torque to eliminate the stress cracks. Three shapes were offered, each in two temple finishes.
Lenses. UV400 polycarbonate with a light gradient tint and anti-reflective coating, suited to an optical customer base, certified to CE EN ISO 12312-1. Polarized was offered as a premium upgrade SKU.
Branding. Discreet laser-engraved house-brand mark on the temple plus a small metal logo detail, with custom-printed optical-style cases and cloths to match the chain's retail identity.
MOQ, lead time & reorder program. The initial buy was 3,000 pairs across six SKUs. We then locked a golden-sample and a fixed tech-pack so every reorder reproduces the approved spec exactly. Reorders run on a standing quarterly cycle with a fixed 28-day production lead time and held tooling, so the buyer simply confirms quantities each quarter. We hold a small safety stock of fast-moving SKUs to cover demand spikes.
Quality. Every batch passes a drill-mount stress test and AQL 2.5 inspection, with photo QC reports sent before shipment so the buyer signs off remotely.
Quiet, reliable, repeatable
After switching to the LumiShades rimless line, the chain's in-store warranty swaps on rimless sunglasses fell by 83% — the drill-mount cracking essentially disappeared once we moved to polycarbonate lenses and controlled drilling. The fixed 28-day quarterly reorder cycle let the optical buyer plan cabinet space and margins with confidence, and the program has now run five consecutive reorders without a single late delivery or spec drift. Batch QC pass rates hold at 99.4%, and the house-brand rimless range has gone from a warranty liability to one of the chain's most profitable own-brand lines.
“Our old rimless supplier kept cracking at the drill holes and the reorders were a lottery. LumiShades locked a golden sample, fixed the lens material, and now every quarter the same product shows up in 28 days. Warranty swaps dropped off a cliff.” — Category Buyer, optical retail chain
