A Bio-Acetate Sustainable Collection for an EU Retailer

How a European multi-brand retailer built a genuinely credible eco sunglasses line on bio-acetate frames and recycled packaging — fully CE EN ISO 12312-1 compliant, with the REACH documentation to back every claim.

Client & Background

A multi-brand EU retailer building its own eco line

The client was a mid-sized retailer operating both stores and an e-commerce site across Germany, the Netherlands and Austria. They already sold third-party eyewear but wanted to launch their own private-label sunglasses collection with a sustainability story strong enough to survive scrutiny from increasingly green-conscious EU shoppers — and from regulators tightening up on greenwashing.

They had a clear brief: bio-based frame material, recycled and recyclable packaging, no PFAS or banned plasticizers, and full compliance documentation so their marketing team could make specific claims without legal risk. The collection would span four silhouettes — a round, a square, a cat-eye and a classic wayfarer — in three earthy colorways each, with an initial 6,000-pair buy.

Challenge

Credible sustainability, not a green sticker

The hard part was authenticity. Plenty of factories will print “eco” on a box; far fewer can document the chain. The retailer needed material that was demonstrably bio-based, packaging that was genuinely recycled and recyclable, and a paper trail their compliance team could file. Under EU rules, sunglasses are personal protective equipment governed by Regulation 2016/425, so each model also needed full CE marking to EN ISO 12312-1 — UV protection, lens category, optical class and impact requirements — alongside REACH conformity for restricted substances.

Two further constraints applied. Bio-acetate behaves slightly differently from conventional acetate in cutting and polishing, so quality control had to be tighter to avoid surface haze. And the retailer wanted color consistency across four shapes and three seasons of expected reorders, which meant the colorways had to be locked to exact Pantone references from the start.

Solution

The LumiShades approach

We treated this as a documentation-led program as much as a manufacturing one.

Frame & materials. All four silhouettes were cut from M49 bio-acetate, a plant-based cellulose acetate plasticized with bio-sourced rather than petroleum-derived agents. We provided the material data sheet and bio-content statement up front. Frames were finished on our acetate-cutting and polishing lines with an extended hand-polish step to manage the slightly softer surface, and fitted with stainless-steel pin hinges (no flash-acetate hinges) for repairability.

Lenses. CR-39 and nylon lenses with UV400 and gradient tints, certified to EN ISO 12312-1 lens category 2 and 3 depending on the colorway. Each lens carried the correct category marking for EU labeling.

Branding & packaging. Temples were laser-engraved rather than printed to avoid solvent inks. Packaging used a recycled-paperboard box, a pouch made from recycled PET felt, and a soy-ink-printed insert listing materials and recyclability — all genuinely recyclable in EU streams.

MOQ & lead time. The 6,000-pair buy across 12 SKUs (four shapes × three colors) sat in our Wholesale/program tier. Samples were delivered in 10 days; after a Pantone confirmation round, production ran 32 days, slightly longer than standard to accommodate the extra polishing and per-SKU color checks.

Compliance. We compiled the technical-file inputs for CE marking — test reports for UV, optical class, robustness and category — plus a REACH declaration and the bio-content documentation, so the retailer's notified-body process and Declaration of Conformity went through without back-and-forth.

The collection passed CE EN ISO 12312-1 testing on all 12 SKUs with no failures, and the retailer's compliance team signed off the Declaration of Conformity using our technical-file package. Because every sustainability claim was documented — bio-content statement, REACH declaration, recyclable-packaging spec — the marketing team was able to publish specific, defensible copy rather than vague “eco-friendly” language. The collection became the retailer's best-reviewed own-brand line, and they placed two reorders within nine months, adding a fifth silhouette to the range on the second.

“We needed sustainability we could prove to a regulator, not just a green logo. LumiShades gave us the bio-acetate documentation, REACH declaration and CE technical file in one package. Our legal team approved the claims first time.” — Head of Private Label, EU eyewear retailer
