ANSI Z80.3 Explained: The US Sunglasses Quality Standard

While the FDA covers impact resistance, ANSI Z80.3 is the standard that defines optical and UV quality for sunglasses in the US market. Major US retailers reference it in their supplier requirements, so any brand selling into the States should know it. Here is the practical breakdown for buyers.

What ANSI Z80.3 covers

ANSI Z80.3 (“Nonprescription Sunglasses and Fashion Eyewear Requirements”) is a voluntary American National Standard. It specifies UV transmittance limits, luminous transmittance categories, traffic-signal recognition, refractive power tolerances, prismatic power and impact requirements. It is the US analogue to EN ISO 12312-1 in Europe.

Transmittance categories

CategoryLuminous transmittanceUse
Cosmetic43–100%Fashion, light tint
General purpose8–43%Everyday sun wear
Special purpose3–8%High glare, sport

UV protection limits

Z80.3 caps the maximum allowed UV transmittance relative to the lens category. General-purpose lenses must hold UVA solar transmittance to no more than the visible transmittance, and UVB to a small fraction of it. Our standard UV400 lenses block 100% up to 400 nm, comfortably inside every Z80.3 class — see our lens explainer in the sourcing guides.

Traffic-signal recognition

A subtle but important clause: lenses must not distort the recognition of red, yellow and green traffic signals. Heavily tinted or strongly mirrored lenses can fail here, which is why we validate lens tints against the standard before approving a custom color.

Traffic-signal recognition is where aggressive fashion tints quietly fail Z80.3 — we test custom colors against it before they ever reach bulk production.

Optical quality tolerances

How LumiShades meets Z80.3

Our quality control process includes spectrophotometer UV testing, lensometer optical checks and tint validation. We supply SGS/Intertek reports against Z80.3 for US-bound programs. Pair this with our FDA impact testing and a single build clears both US requirements.

Buyer takeaways

If you sell into US retail, ask for a Z80.3 report on your lens build and confirm any custom tint passes traffic-signal recognition. request a quote and we will run the optical and UV validation on your design before bulk.

Why source this from Wenzhou with LumiShades

Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province is widely regarded as China’s eyewear manufacturing capital, producing a large share of the world’s sunglasses. That concentration matters to buyers: a deep local supply chain for acetate sheet, hinges, lens blanks, plating and packaging means shorter component lead times, easier color and material matching, and a workforce with decades of eyewear-specific skill. LumiShades has manufactured in this ecosystem since 2009, and our vertical integration — in-house injection molding, acetate cutting, CNC milling, lens tinting, decoration and quality control — means no part of ANSI Z80.3 sunglasses is quietly subcontracted to a workshop you cannot audit.

For international buyers, that vertical control translates into accountability. When a single factory owns every step, defects are traced and fixed at source rather than bounced between vendors, and your specifications survive intact from first sample to bulk. We back this with 15+ years of experience, shipments to 60+ countries, more than 5 million pairs produced per year and a 98.5% on-time delivery rate. Our certifications — CE EN ISO 12312-1, FDA registration, ANSI Z80.3, AS/NZS 1067, REACH, ISO 9001 and BSCI audit — mean the compliance documentation your market requires already exists. Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order quantity? Our MOQ is 50 pairs per design, which lets new brands and buyers validate ANSI Z80.3 sunglasses before committing to volume. Pricing improves at 300, 1,000 and 5,000+ pairs, dropping as low as $2.10 per pair on volume programs.

How long does it take? Samples are ready in 7–10 days and bulk production runs 25–35 days, plus QC, packing and shipping. Using an existing frame shape avoids new tooling and is the fastest route; fully custom moulds and acetate builds add time.

Can you handle custom branding and compliance documentation? Yes. We decorate in-house (laser engraving, pad printing, metal logo plates, custom temple colors and packaging) and provide the UV, impact and standard-specific test reports your destination markets require. Tell us your target countries up front and we build the right documentation into the order.
